Oh YES, meeting up with other fans are what makes it all worth while. I have met so many from the boards and there are still so many I want to meet. For me that has been the most fun with all the music I love, meeting other fans. I have done it with Southern Rock (oh stop laughing), and with AIC fans and have been all over my country to meet up with them and do road trips, as well as meeting up with Lisse in London! The most fun EVER. I even went to Kansas a few years ago to meet up with two other fans (AIC) just to hang out and spend a weekend watching their videos and sharing our fan stories. It was the MOST fun. I highly recommend it.
So far I have not had one bad experience doing this. I agree with what you said about being wary of meeting some performers because I am afraid I would get them on a bad day and they would be rude and that would lessen my "fan-ship"<--probably not a word
So far no one has really disappointed me and I have met performers from many different types of music. Henry Rollins called me on acting stupid once, but even that was okay. You would expect him to do that

I find Henry Rollins nowadays strangely attractive

Kidding, I have always always loved Hank! Just look at all the Black Flag videos I have posted. I loved him more in 1984 because I love long hair (and the Black Flag records and his book 21361) but he is just as cool now and WAY way intelligent. Intelligence and humor? Oh YEAHHHHHH Baby now we are talking attractive
