If I ever get a job on TV I'm so gonna make sure he gets the treatment he really deserves! I have often thought the same about if I were a journalist... it bugs me no end to see him getting asked the same questions every interview. Seriously, do these people do any research at all? You'd think they might have a brief look round his website or something. For instance, in practically every one of this most recent crop of scrapbook-related interviews, he's been asked about his motivation in putting it together. EVERY single time he's said it came from being on tour with PiL recently. It's the same with stuff about his personal life, I get so bored of the whole 'OMG you've been with the same person for 30 years? No way' stuff you get in a lot of interviews Though I do love to hear about that stuff Anyway, back on topic, I found some brief clips of John at the awards: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITSdooXE2lY www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L9x3SmrCe0 here's him talking about Ari (good on ya Johnny) when they told him not to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8WPQkmq4fU

I know! It's like they know absolutely nothing, it's not as if it's hard to find out about these things...and they ask the same questions over and over again, this goes for ALL the members! I know why Paul rarely does interviews Yeah, it seems difficult for them to understand that you can actually love a person and be together with them for 30 years in a row! It's the typical mentality of the 21st century. How the hell can they tell him not to do it...? This man is famous for doing what he's told not to do! God they are sooo stupid.

Yeah and I noticed many interviewers are stuck in the 1970s when they interview any member of the band. Like that have done nothing at all since Sid passed away

Ari and the Slits were truly innovative and original and should not be forgotten. Good for him for bringing up the loss.

Humbly giving a little bit from my perspective, at least from when I was interviewing bands 20+ years ago... Published/broadcast interviews are rarely spontaneous, and that's by design--the artist has something to sell, and the media outlet has space or airwaves it needs to fill. The media outlet has to speak to the broadest audience possible, so the questions are going to be fairly generic most of the time, and the article will rehash history that a fan would already know. Even if the writer is knowledgeable, rest assured there's a clueless editor behind him who wants more accessible stuff and less inside info, lest it alienate the typical reader. And, frankly, much of the time the artist has been coached in what to say (and especially told not to veer off the main subject, which is the product they're trying to sell). I had several lead singers give me, practically quote for quote, the same interview they'd given previously on the tour. Others are prima donnas and won't let you touch subjects they don't want to talk about, particularly drugs, former bandmates they're now feuding with, and bad business deals. And others are just not very good conversationalists and won't give more than a yes or a no...all of these lead to boring articles that are not necessarily the fault of the writer. Of course, John will go in pretty much any direction he wants to! But if the writer has been told to interview him about the scrapbook, he has to rein him in and follow the assignment. And really, how many original questions can you ask about a book: why did you write it? How did the publishing deal come about? Did you enjoy the process? Etc. etc. etc. The writer's best hope is that he can squeeze in an original story about one of the photos or that John will say something new and interesting that still fits within the context of the article. That's my two cents, anyway (more like five bucks, when you consider the length!). If I ever get a job on TV I'm so gonna make sure he gets the treatment he really deserves! I have often thought the same about if I were a journalist... it bugs me no end to see him getting asked the same questions every interview. Seriously, do these people do any research at all? That's true, I suppose they don't expect all the readers to know everything. However, for journalists who actually know something, and in longer interviews (that don't necessarily have something to do with the scrapbook) there is a possibility of including a column or something with facts about the band or member they're interviewing and then they might be able to ask more relevant questions and come up with some new, more inventive questions. Like lizardcat said that is not always easy to do, but with someone like John I think he'd be happy to be asked something different for a change.
