Psycho's Path... track by track by John Lydon
The Songs On Psycho's Path'Grave Ride' It's a sad song, a love song placed in a war torn situation. I took the idea from the Bosnian tragedy. It's written from the viewpoint of a man being rounded up for execution. It's a letter to his wife, a last will and testament. It's a person caught up in a situation not of his own making, and facing the inevitable. 'Dog' You can only create something original if you are confident. It's also a comment on religion, and people who try to tell me that the bible was written by god. The bible is as corrupt as any book out there. Whats wrong with Adam and Eve having a bit of sex? It's a good thing they did, because there would'nt be any of us without them. 'Psychopath' It's loosely based around the serial killer John Gacy. I took the viewpoint that we all have the potetial to be a serial killer, but we decide not to, and by that decision we are better than him. It's not some earth shaking original idea, but I see the potential for murder in everyone. For instance, far too many religious maniacs realize that they have caused many a death in the name of the lord. If that isn't pyschopathic behaviour I don't know what is. 'Sun' Here's a track that doesn't really use musical instruments at all. Just a collection of toilet rolls that I'm honking through, cardboard boxes for drums, and an accordian that I can hardly play - and yet it sounds like a very nice song. It could be a big load of horrible noise, but with restraint it works much better. 'Another Way' I listen to other peoples music all the time, but I just want to do things another way. I don't want to imitate - that would be lazy and direspectful. Rules are for fools. Thats not a flippant remark. You really need to understand the rules and why they work before you can disrespect them so fully. 'Dis Ho' The idea came from a film - I can't remeber the name of it - about how people ge themselves involved in these silly love triangles I put myself in that position in the song, although it's not based on personel experience. I'm well known for being completely loyal; once I make a commitment, it's forever. 'Take Me' You can take these lyrics quite literally. I'm giving voice to the self doubt which all of us experience. Of course I want to be loved, but preferably on my own terms. I won't live a lie just to be popular. I've never been one to hold a popular opinion, because popular opinion is usually just mythology by any other name. 'A No And A Yes' The modern world is full of information, and I cannot understand someone sitting on the fence and not having opinions. People can't seem to make up their minds. Of course, I can be hesitant too, and I'm not advocating jumping to ready made conclusions. But theres a difference between personel debate - which I think far too few people actually do - and complete confusion. 'Stump' I stand up and tell whats what. Too few people do that, and they seem to resent me doing it, even though they take a perverse pleasure out of my actions. They love you and simultaneously hate you for saying what they themselves want to say. They don't want to stand out in a crowd, but they wish they could - they get jealous of the people who stand up.Thats why you have so many ignorant people that love to spout rhetoric without understanding a single damn thing they are talking about. That can be anywhere from The Clash right to modern times. I'm dealing particularly with the wonderful world of music, but it's applicable to practically any politician or street corner loudmouth.

This just says it all to me......John really does tell it like it is in his musical style and voice.....He is right when he says that many people don't take his material the right way....... He tells it like it is...and that is that...there is no *grey area*.......That is why he is so good at what he does......

I love that song too Tao, and John is so prolific when talking about it. I like the part especially where he says "they get jealous of the people that stand up"......he is so fucking RIGHT I hate people who don't have the balls to say something they feel or think themselves then get pissed when you do and people agree with you......

Been on this board for a couple of days and its time to make some enemies I think.
Used to admire John for his forward thinking, being one step ahead of the crowd, Metal Box being the prime example. But, and its a pretty big but, psychos path was a step backwards for the man. Nothing at all inovative or exciting here, 'Take me' could have been lifted straight from 'Album' ten years previously. I would think that most people who read this board would agree that attitude and humour are the trademarks of Mr Lydon and both are lacking in this recording. Not ever been one for sweeping statements but .....ITS SHIT AND I HOPE HE NEVER GETS NEAR A RECORDING STUDIO AGAIN IF THIS IS THE STANDARD OF WORK HE ASPIRES TO. THIS RECORD DOESNT EVEN MAKE A GOOD ASHTRAY COS THERES A FUCKIN HOLE IN THE MIDDLE.
hope i dont come across as sitting on the fence here.

I have to disagree with you....nbds....I have heard several songs from this album and I liked them.....Granted I don't own the album per se...but from what I've heard it's good...Sometimes I think John is an acquired taste.....But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.......

Nope, nowhere even NEAR the fence nbds, but since you quoted me I hope you don't think I am going to be the "enemy". I actually expected many people to have that feeling about the CD judging by "official" sites. You will never be flamed for an opinion by me on this board or any other. As to the CD, I just respectfully disagree, I enjoyed it. It is certainly different for sure but fun. I obviously liked many of the lyrics too. Judging from Glen's book (have I mentioned Glen's book enough do you think? ), he hated it and John wasn't particularly thrilled about it either . Go figure

Wow, that's a very bold statement and for me it sounds very surprising. Though you did bring out some aspects which I hadn't thought about. I see why you think some of the tracks seem like they've been 'lifted' from Album. I don't want to disagree nor argue, because personal opinions are to be left alone. But I have to state that for me pshyco's path was exactly what was looking for, it has a similar sound to his previous work, but everything is richer and bolder and more powerful,( I'm still trying to identify all the instruments and sounds he has used). A lot of stuff going on and the lyrics reek of wittiness and humor.
I do applaud you for your honesty!

In the face of the unstoppable Sex Pistols swindle industry. John Lydon perversely stretches himself to the near impossible limits to not only disassociate himself from his previous incarnation, but to ailenate, to the point of hate, those who still resoulutely cling to his former public image...
...just another con game? A gigantic piss-take to test the publics tolerance level? A display of contempt? Another attempt at commercial suicide? Are PIL incapable of writing songs?...
... makes the plastic ono band doodlings sound positively singalong by comparison...
... His lyric is incomprehensible as his voice alternates between a demented bray and a Bolanesque vibrato. Whether it is a hoax or a signpost for the future is open to interpretatin. It exists, it irritates, it intrigues. You have to keep on playing it.
"NME singles reviews 30th june 1979 Death Disco."
This is the John I want to record music. The last sentence says it all. He has reached heights since then but Psychos path isnt one of them
