One of the best records of all time.......comments? Favorite songs? When did you first hear it? I first heard it in high school and was so taken by the raw sound, but especially by John's voice. It is rare to hear an artist keep his regional accent when singing and I just wanted to hear it again and again. The lyrics are masterful (such a young guy writing that good ). I don't think there is a bad song on the whole record and every time I listen I have a new favorite.

Favorite song: "New York."
Today I think it's easily one of the top 5 albums of all times, on a par with Sgt. Pepper or the Dust Bowl Ballads as far as being a life-changing album.
Hard to remember how I felt about this album specifically when it came out. I tend to bunch a lotta albums together coz 1977 was a year when so many stunning debuts came out without a short period of time of each other. Coming a year after the Modern Lovers' debut, '77 saw great debuts by the Pistols, Clash, Wire (Pink Flag), & Elvis Costello (My Aim is True), & even Dave Edmunds' Get It, which we all thought was a debut coz his previous albums got so little att'n! Then '78 saw Nick Lowe's Pure Pop for Now People, & in '79 there was Joe Jackson's Get Sharp & also Get the Knack. That's a lotta excellent debuts in a short period of time! NTM how many of these folks came up with great follow-up albums when we'd barely digested their debut albums? There will never be another time period like it!
