1977 was a good year for music, because despite Studio 54 opening and Saturday Night Fever playing at the theater, 1977 was the start of the "punk explosion".
Performers like the Stranglers, Iggy Pop, the Jam, the Ramones, the Damned, Blondie and Wire - to name JUST A FEW! - were on the scene to welcome new bands like The Clash, the B-52s, Black Flag, Crass, X, Stiff Little Fingers, Devo, and (the not punk band) the Talking Heads (I had no idea that Midnight Oil had been around since the late 70s! - Not punk either, but an interesting factoid nonetheless).
But the band that had the busiest year has to be the SEX PISTOLS.
January 27, 1977: After releasing only one single for the band, EMI terminates its contract with the Sex Pistols.
February 15, 1977: Sid Vicious replaced Glen Matlock as the bassist for the Sex Pistols, because it is rumored that Glen liked the Beatles.
March 10, 1977: A & M signs the Sex Pistols in a ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace
March 16, 1977: A & M terminates the contract.
March - June 1977: Never Mind the Bollocks is being recorded at the Wessex Studios, in Highbury, London.
April 3, 1977: Sid Vicious debuted with the band at the Screen on the Green in London.
May ?, 1977: The band signs their third and final record deal with Virgin Records.
May 27, 1977: The Pistols' second single, "God Save the Queen" is released - just in time for the Queen's Silver Jubilee!
October 28, 1977: Never mind the bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols is released.
[side note: "The original UK album contained only eleven tracks, before the group changed their mind and decided to include "Submission"].
November 12, 1977: The album, Never mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, hits number one on the UK charts.
December 25, 1977: The Sex Pistols' final UK performance took place at Ivanhoe's in Huddersfield.
