So, I've got these two dolls (guess maybe the guys prefer the term "action figures"): Right now they are still in their packages. Last night, my mom, sister & brother were over for dinner & my sister was talking about the doll house building class she is taking, and the doll house she is currently making for my mom and the much larger one she plans to build for herself.
So, my sister is planning on making this very large doll house for herself after finishing the smaller one for mom. The discussion led to "who" would live in the house & that the scale is 1 inch equals 1 foot, so a 6 inch doll would be the proportionally sized person for the houses. I mentioned the Johnny & Sid dolls I have & questioned whether or not they were the right size. My sister agreed that there are a lot of 6 inch "action figures" that would fit these houses & that she in fact was planning on her house being the mansion for the X-men figures she currently has.
I brought out Johnny & Sid to get an idea of the size (I was really surprised at the scale of these doll houses - much bigger than what I had pictured). So, it was getting late (my mom & brother had left) and Bob was getting nervous when my sister said that John & Sid could come visit the X-men mansion to play (he seemed to have an issue with 50-something women having their dolls visit), but . . . my sister said "Oh, if you want I could build a place for them, too." That way they wouldn't have to stay trapped in their plastic. She said she could make a small place - peeling wallpaper, discarded beer cans - a slum or whatever I wanted for them. Maybe a recording studio or pub.
My question for all of you is - what should I ask her to make for John & Sid? Re-create Gunter Grove (though I think I've only seen pictures of the living room, bedroom & roof)? A club (so they could be on stage)? Any other suggestions? Let me know if you have any ideas, I like the idea of giving them some space.
Thanks, Joan

Thanks, JoanI have those dolls too Joan, and mine are on stage. However, I think since your sister is so talented, why not have her do the set of the video they were crafted from (God Save the Queen)......I guess that set is kinda sparse and it would be hard to get the feel without a Cookie and a Jonesy but still...............if not that, then Gunter Grove is a fantastic idea

Great (not NY) Dolls, Joan! I also think that the Gunter Grove and the the GSTQ video set are the best ideas. Or you can place them in Sex/Seditionaries shop - so John can mime to the jukebox

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to try to get my sister to work with me on a portion of Gunter Grove. I'm thinking doing the living room as a 1st floor, a 2nd floor bedroom & then the roof (since John seemed to like hanging out there at least for pictures). There is a good photo of the living room in John's book that will be good to work from. And I have this one of his bedroom: I think someone on this site posted this photo of the outside of the house - I'm thinking it is the right place as the front windows seem to match those in the living room photo (which I still need to scan) I know there are a number of photos of various people sitting on the couch in the living room that have been posted. Does anyone have other photos showing more details of inside the house? If so, I'd appreciate it if you could post them. I imagine this project is going to take some time, but I'll show you the end result whenever we get there (probably a year or two from now!) Thanks, Joan

O.k. Joan, this is what I have: This is a good one Now, these are definitely his speakers, but the bookshelf doesn't appear in the first picture The "couch" In this one, you can see the detail of what's written on the fabric: "........ you're in good company" Decorations... At first I wasn't quite sure about this being one of his walls, but since the three small pictures only appear in one of them, it seems they could have been taken in 2 different periods, what makes me think it IS one of his walls... The crucifix looks the same, but there's something on it, and the lamp is different, but both pictures are VERY SIMILAR John's taste most probably

Michelle,
Thanks for the photos. The one of the living room looks like it must have been taken the same time as the one in John's book - but in the book he has a record in his hand - so this is a different shot. I love the light coming in from the windows.
The two different photos with the crucifix and wall light fixture are interesting. Notice that while the light fixture was changed, the ring that he had hanging over it is the same. Some good details to try to fit in.
Snoogans - I promise to post pictures when it is done. Though I expect this to take some time. Don't expect anything too soon.

The Gunter Grove project is getting started! I'm going to "doll house" class with my sister tomorrow night to see what modifications we'll be able to make to convert the row house kit to look more like John's. After that I'll have a better idea of what I've gotten myself into!

No pictures yet. Actually the kit hadn't come in when I went to "class" on May 13th. I was kind of disappointed as she had said it would be in; but we went through the pictures I had so she could get an idea of what I'm trying for.
We discussed the modifications needed (change a couple of windows to french doors, cut off the sloped roof & dormer window to have a flat roof, change the porch roof). The owner of the shop is going to get her husband to cut the kit so it will be ready when we get back from vacation the second week of June. Then we can get started.
Johnny & Sid will have a home soon.

My sister & I have started working on the dollhouse. Progress is rather slow. For starters we needed to design & build the basement level since the dollhouse "kit" had the front door at street level whereas the real house has stairs up from the street. Anyway we have the basement framing done: Next we will put up the front wall sides (front wall already has the cutouts for the doors & windows) Lots of pieces of wood still to be assembled before we can start adding the exterior brickwork, stairs, etc. Going to take a while, but so far it has been fun! And, today, while scanning the web to see if I could find any more pictures of the house, I found that apparently, the house is for sale. So if you have an extra million pounds or so lying around, you could buy it for yourself (see the following website): www.foxtons.co.uk/property-for-sale-in-chelsea/chpk0294252From the couple photos below, there have been some changes made since John owned it: Now (Reception Room): Then (Johnny's Living Room): Now (Rooftop Terrace): Then (Just a Roof): Joan
