Alright.
We all know the story.
We know that in early 1977, Glen Matlock, original bass player for the Sex Pistols, parted company with the band and was replaced by one John Beverly or John Ritchie, a/k/a Sidney Vicious.
What is not so clear is the TRUE reason for Glen's departure, which is the subject of this poll. Hell, there's even controversy regarding whether Glen was (a) fired OR (b) quit OR (c) it was a mutual decision. In such he said/he said situations, they say there's one story, and then another, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle. So what's the truth?
And can we finally put one of the great unsolved mysteries of the 20th century to rest, after of course, kicking it around a bit?
So whaddya think?

My vote goes to "Glen wanted to sing lead (once in a while)." WHAT??? If you're thinking, hey, I never heard that theory before, well, uh -- you're right. I made that one up myself. But I base it on conclusive, scientific evidence. If you've seen the video from the Notre Dame concert, Glen practically drowns John out while singing "background" vocals to Pretty Vacant. It's a little embarrasing at times. It's like, please stop looking at John all the time people, direct your gaze to the left once in a while. Glen has also been known to do Pete Townsend jumps. Now, if the Sex Pistols were punk, why do such a thing? Do the Sex Pistols strike you as a band where you'd expect members to engage in such gymnastics while on stage? I think not. So why did he do it? Perhaps for the same reason that he drowned out John - to say, there's four of us in this band, including myself, the writer of the music. Yes, I think the Sex Pistols were hit with the scenario that affects a lot of bands which have a charismatic figure like a Johnny Rotten. Think about Blondie - some of the guys resented all the attention Debbie was getting and wanted some recognition too. Same with the Sex Pistols??? Maybe this is a situation that affected the bassists only. I mean, didn't history repeat itself with Sid? Maybe if John would have turned the mike stand over to Glen once in a while, Glen might never have left the band. Anyway, I think that was the main reason he left.

I think he just wanted to play and let's face it, it's not like the Pistols were racking up the gigs.

Well I voted for the cleanly one because it irritated Jonesy so much but that wasn't why Glen left. In Glen's book he states he left because he couldn't get along with John and refused to play nice. John said it is him or me, and the band gave Glen that ultimatum. Either be nice to John or get out. Glen got out.

Um, I totally think, that he wanted a more "nicer" image. He didn't like the direction that John led and Malcolm's so called "management". He was pushed around too much, too. Jeez, poor guy, he end up in such a bad situation, but hey, he made those great songs and after him, Sid came along and destroyed everything. So yeah, I really think, that Glen was thrown out, just because he wanted something else than the punk look. I don't blame him. He did, what he had to do.
