What have Amy Winehouse and the Arctic Monkeys got in common? They've both been influenced by Sid Vicious, according to Krissi Murison, deputy editor of NME.
If the Sex Pistol hadn't died in 1979 aged just 21, he would have been 50 years old today, and his hard-living lifestyle has been a template for hundreds of misbehaving musicians ever since.
Krissi said: "Anyone with any attitude - from Amy Winehouse to Alex Turner - probably owes a little something to Sid."
One of the leading figures in punk, Sid was bassist for the Sex Pistols - despite not actually being able to play his instrument very well.
Despite his musical shortcomings, he has been described as "the attitude" of punk and attracted a fanatical following.
As the Sex Pistols enjoyed whirlwind success, Sid - whose real name was John Simon Ritchie - began a relationship with groupie Nancy Spungen and quickly descended into heroin addiction.
When Nancy was found dead with a stab wound to the stomach in 1978, Sid was arrested and charged for her murder. He quickly deteriorated and died of a heroin overdose the following year.
