Interesting. Guess this all depends on the defintion of "punk." The Pistols may be the only true "punk" band coz they made one album & broke up, & didn't hafta go into that "now what?" mode that saw the Clash create London Calling & saw other punk bands go into reggae & funk & whatever else.
Based on their one & only album & assorted non-LP B-sides, I'd put the Pistols as #1. But in reality, there's nothing in the band members' histories that suggests that they could have repeated this punk greatness time & again. The main author of those of early songs was Glen Matlock. Nobody else in the band had great song-writing credentials. And they certainly woulda needed great songs to keep it going.

Glen and JOHN wrote the songs......the lyrics are just as important as the music to me When the band reformed the whole reason there were no new songs was John said no. |

I love the Ramones. I think they were punk - they were pretty much leaders of the U.S. scene, especially out of NYC. But I agree they should not be #1.
Yet the Ramones are ranked this way in many polls I've seen. No way they could or should ever out-rank the Sex Pistols. As John says "Yeah, Sheena is a punk rocker is a nice song. But Anarchy in the U.K. almost got me sent away to jail for the rest of my f****** life!"
