When I started watching all the Youtube videos of John that I could find, I noticed an adorable trend. So I did some research online and with another member here--Simonsezwhut--in order to find out whether my suspicions were true. I haven't read John's book yet, but I've read quite a bit about the man on the web, and Simonsezwhut has given me some very interesting tidbits about John from his book.
OK, here's the observation I made, which I found very charming. Whenever John is interviewed by a woman, he is not only softer and kinder in his delivery toward that journalist than he is with other male journalists, but sometimes he seems not to be able to maintain eye contact with her. This charmed me, and I wondered if Lydon had a shyness or soft spot for women, even during his highly-acerbic periods.
My research has led me to the fact that John was incredibly shy with girls. I'm sure most of the fans on this site already know this, but it's something I'm learning about just now. Simonsezwhut has informed me that in his book, John addresses this issue, and that Chrissie Hynde even remarks upon John's tendency to get almost cripplingly shy around females.
Does anyone else find this absolutely charming?
Watch the series of interviews on Youtube where Janet Street-Porter is talking to the Sex Pistols. Lydon is so soft-spoken, addresses most of his comments either to his hands, the floor, or the other band members, and can barely maintain eye contact with the woman. I LOVE the dichotomy of this snarling, street-urchiny rough boy not being able to look a girl in the eye!
It's both interesting and revealing, then, to see John singing "No Fun" in his highly original, aggressive, emotional way. One would think, on one hand, that he would be rather flippant with women, judging from the surly aspect of this performance. But then, on deeper consideration, one realizes that, due to his shyness, John would have to behave in such a manner just to be able to get up on stage, let alone face the females he found so formidable. The vulnerability of John's performances begins to make a lot of sense.
