Yeah.
I know, I know, there are threads with books and stuff but I'm very picky and a list is fine for me.
So.
My means of getting book recs pretty much ditched so I need someone to help me out.
To get a bit of my taste, some of my recent favorites are A Clockwork Orange, ThePerks of Being a Wallflower, Lolita, 1984, I was Told There'd Be Cake.. yeah. you get the pattern; essays, pedophilia, psychological.. things.
I'm wanting to read The Wasp Facotry and about 4689759 other books, but, I'm not sure if I'll like them.
Any first hand encounters?

Never read the Wasp Factory, but I read more books in a week than I probably should. I have four library cards in my wallet to facilitate my reading needs... so here are my recommendations for someone your age. Most of them are tombs and will take a while to read and you might not like or get them at first (I didn't), but it's good to have them in your library for college/showing off/being pretentious. :]
I recommend: "The Fountainhead" "Atlas Shrugged" "Anthem" and "We the LIving" all by Ayn Rand. These are HUGE books - be warned. Ayn Rand was Russian and brilliant, but most of her books suggest some weird rape fantasies as well as some psychosis issues, but her writing is dense as a piece of pumpernickel bread and reading it is like fighting your way through a mob of angry, sticky five-year-olds. But at the end, it's rewarding that you got through it alive.
"The Poisonwood Bible" Barbara Kingsolver. About a missionary who takes his whole family to Africa. Drama ensues, dad goes crazy, one of the kids die, family gets seperated. Amazing book.
Anything by HP Lovecraft.
"Four Seasons in Rome" by Anthony Doerr. For no reason other than, I met the guy, he lives next to where I go to college, and he's hilarious. A little pretentious, but definitely funny to read, if nothing else but for the cute memories of his kids.
"The Secret Garden" by Francis Burnett. Sickly sweet, made into a few movies, but a better book than you would think. Dickon sounds like a bad ass kid. Also, English Moors = Win.
"East of Eden" John Steinbeck. This book is also a beast. It has a lot of Biblical speeches and dialogue, a lot of prostitution, a set of twins that represent Cain and Abel, an old Irish well digger - the whole shebang. Steinbeck left NOTHING out of this book. It's like "Of Mice and Men" times 14 billion, with Steinbeck at level "FULL EGO." However, a brilliant book despite it's pretentious moments.
Anything by William Faulkner.
"Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy. I read this twice in a month one time. The first time I read it I hated it. But it was meaty enough to surprise me upon a second reading, since I had nothing else to read; I liked it the second time. You need time to absorb the material.
"Satanic Verses" Salman Rushdie. Rushdie got a fatwa placed on his head by almost all Islamic leaders for this book = enough reason to even read it. Not the greatest book ever, but hype never lets me down.
"The Haunting of Hill House" Shirley Jackson. I'm into the occult, so this book hit me like 8 tons of bricks to the head.
"The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" Tom Wolfe. I'm from Eugene, Oregon, hippie-town USA, so this book is required reading for all citizens of Oregon. It's hilarious and a little disheartening, but awesome in it's context because it was so relavent back in the day.
Just random, but as a poet, I feel the need to push reading poetry on people: Allen Ginsberg Ai Ballamy Bach Mary Oliver (flowery bullcrap poetry, but she's won more awards than I've been alive - required for anyone who loves literature) Adrienne Rich CD Wright Thich Nhat Hahn Seamus Heaney Goethe John Keats (the original devisor of "negative capability" - aka removing the "I" of the author from the "I" of the writing.)
That was a long ass list, but hey, you got some stuff to read.
PS I have a list of about 250 books to read, if you are interested. They are all the "Great Classics" because I feel that, as a Creative Writing, I should be more versed in literature.

I have no age group, but, I do like a lot of these, thanksthanksthanks.
Oh, The Secret Garden~ Read that a few years back. It was good- perfect summer read, y'know?
WAITWAIT.
Excuse me.
Where is Oscar Wilde?
Mish, where is Oscar?
AND.
WHAT IS THIS?
NO ERZA POUND?
MISH, I'M ASTOUNDED.
And the week thing, I know what you mean x3
For abuot two months I got into a thing of reading one a day (smaller books, nothing to really think about). Can't remember one of them because of it.
By the way, iis 'The satanic Verses' the same as 'The Satanic Bible'. They sound about one and the same.
If they're not, go read The Satanic Bible while I'm gone.

I was listing just the first few on my list, but no means conclusive, dear. :]
I'm a huge Wilde fan, even though he took himself WAAAAY too seriously (dude had a chip on his shoulder and EVERYONE had to hear about it...at length.) Also, I love Ezra Pound...my freshman year lit teacher named her son after Ezra and I remember loving her as a teacher, so I immediately read EVERYTHING he ever wrote.
I'm a Creative writing major with a focus on poetry, so yes, I do read a ton of poetry. I read a lot of poetry collections at night - they're usually only 65 pages and pretty cheap. Those would be good too. Also, there is this collection of Prose poetry that you might like called "Models of the Universe." As for other poetry (besides the classic poets, because I like to push the unknown poets): John Betjaman, Sri Chinmoy, Andrew Motion, Anna Ahkamatova, Johan Wolfgang Von, and Czeslaw Milosz. (As a Russian, I must push the Russian poets of great.)
Satanic Verses is not the same as the Satanic Bible, that I know of. Satanic Verses was really hyped in the 80s because of the fatwa and that's why it became a best seller. Either way, it's a pretty meaty book, dry but kind of interesting.
Like I said, not a totally conclusive list, because new books are always written. ;] Enjoy reading, devotchka.
(PS the reason I said someone your age is because sometimes books are waaay out of your grasp even if you think they won't be. There are still books that I can't understand, even at 19 and in college, because they are WAAAY out of my grasp of understanding.)

Recently I have started reading alot, so I might have a few books to recommend.
I highly recommend a few books written by Paulo Coelho. He's really good. "Veronica Decides To Die" is a brilliant read. I also recommend Thomass Harris' books about Hannibal Lecter. I'm sorry, I have no idea how are they called in english. I'm not from england.

Thomas Harris' books are titled: "Silence of the Lambs", "Hannibal", "Red Dragon", and "Hannibal Rising." They're good books. I've started a thread on them before. ;]

My tastes are generally tend to lead more towards the paranormal/fantasy genre. What can I say? I deal with tons of heavy shit at work and, therefore, like to escape reality from time to time.
I've been into vampire novels for years now. Some of my faves are:
The Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward (currently reading) Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck by Christopher Moore (Hilarious!) The Southern Vampire Series aka Sookie Stackhouse/TrueBlood novels (which I'm currently reading) The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare
Fave Sci-Fi/Horror - The Shining by Stephen King
I have plenty others I've read and enjoyed but for the life of me, at this moment, I can't think of them all. I'll be back when I remember more!
