music.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2291957,00.html I wouldn't want to judge without being there or without knowing the full story (no one BUT the person attacked would comment/had time to comment before the story was published), but this doesn't look good for Johnny. I believe John himself is not a racist, but I know in his book, he hinted that some of his friends not being the most accepting people (ie, not wanting some of his friends to meet other friends, etc). It also kind of disappoints me that someone would even be beat up by Johnny/Johnny's friends, as well as to feel offended by them and like they were being racist towards him... especially another artist. HOWEVER, having said that, you never know what the Bloc Party guy was asking/saying, so I guess we'll find out. And you never know how much Johnny and his friends had had to drink - drinking makes you say and do really stupid, stupid, stupid things. Either way, violence is never the answer. I hope there's more to this story than, well, this story.

Some people see racism where it doesn't exist & some like to throw the racist word around as they know it will get media attention.
As for John, I don't think he cares at all about a person's race. (I doubt that his grandsons believe him to be racist.) However, that also means that he isn't likely to fawn over another person just because of their race, or if they happen to a member of a "hot" band or think they are. He supposedly yelled at a young white female singer at the Q awards - does that mean he doesn't like whites or women?
It isn't really clear just who started throwing punches. But, Mish, I agree with you - violence should not be necessary. Unfortunately, our world is full of violence - a split lip rather minor.

I think John had the person that was instigating forcibly removed and that person/persons fought back. Hence they got their ass handed to them. I think this much is clear from John's official statement.

I seriously doubt that John was in the wrong here. I just think that his tendency to say what he thinks gets him in trouble with people who expect everything to be politically correct. Just goes to show that nothing has changed over the last 30+ years! People couldn't accept his honesty then & they can't accept it now. That said, I still think it is very unfortunate that these types of things have to get physical. You should be able to say what you think without concern that you will get smacked. And you should be able to accept that someone doesn't agree with you without trying to smack them. Sometimes I think that is a male / female differentiation - why do guys have to prove themselves in a physical sense? Joan

Joan I know what you mean Joan - I wonder if it's that testosterone kicking in that causes men to take things to a physical level. I know I hate fights, particularly physical but verbal as well, and would prefer to try to talk things out.

John's statement
On last night's BBC 1, The One Show John took the opportunity to speak out against recent allegations:
"There has been a hell of a lot of freedom of the press, shall we say, where they have run wild, atrocious, really, really hurtful stories.
"My grandchildren are Jamaican. Right? Now this is an absolute offence to them and me, when you read stories like that that are allowed to go to print - absolutely unfounded - and have the liberty to take liberties with a man like me, and call me racist when my entire life has proved exactly the opposite."

It might have been the case of the guy being a little overzealous - or possibly drunk, like I said, people do silly things....

It must be really annoying for him that the press and everyone makes so much attention to something that didn't happen. John have never been a racist and will never be one!!
