Leftovers
My back aches when I sit too long. I can never keep my legs still. I get bruises all the time. Leftovers. Mills called me Ostrich, because of how long I stretched my neck when I danced. I quit five years ago. But the opening sounds of Tableau 1 from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” still make my heart flutter and my stomach churn. I remember hearing the music start and hurriedly jamming my fingers down my throat as I gripped the porcelain edge, bracing myself to go out on stage and dance like I was healthy.
