Mary Travers is gone at 72. She was the lovely female voice of Peter, Paul, and Mary---an extremely influential folk trio from the 1960s. They were there in 1963 on the podium when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. They have stood as a strong voice for civil rights, human rights, and peace. I have always loved this band, the humor that they have, and the sense of childlike belief that we can change this world for the better. Puff The Magic Dragon was one of the first songs I ever learned. Godspeed, Ms. Travers, I hope there is peace and love where you now are.
We'll see you around Mary...

Dear Ms. Travers,
When I was a teen I remember hearing Puff The Magic Dragon and thinking now that I was more "adult" I got the meaning I didn't get as a child. Suddenly and cleverly I understood that "Puff" was about smoking Pot and you and your fellow band-mates were trying to get us to tune in like the sixties. How clever of you, I thought, to use a cartoon. Teenagers think they know it all but they know nothing.
Today, as I hear of your death, I think about my oldest son. Troy also saw your cartoon of Puff the Magic Dragon and heard that song through that just as I had as a child . Only now, as a parent I see exactly how stupid I was as a teenager. I understand what you meant by the loss of innocence in children and how a small child plays with cut-outs, crayons, and glue-sticks but puts those things away in their teen years for girls/boys and football/cheerleading. We, as parents, mourn that loss of innocence and we mourn our babies. I will mourn YOU Ms. Travers. I will mourn the period in time you represent. You were young and idealistic in the sixties and now in the cynical years in which I live and my son has grown up, we laugh at you and those ideals. But my son at 17 can still watch or listen to Puff the Magic Dragon and cry. God bless you for that. You are irreplaceable to me and to my family. My greatest tribute to you that I can offer is my three youngest children, and I promise you that they will hear your music and listen with that same idealism that Liz, Troy, and myself did. They may outgrow you for a time, but they will return with the same warmth and sense of family that we have returned with. I hope you have found your Aquarius across the river Styx, Beautiful Lady, and that there are no cemeteries or wars over there.
Love, Shandon, Lizzie, Troy, Coda, Jacoby, and Shanna
