I just saw this film for the first time tonight although it has been out since 1987. Denzel Washington was nominated for his first Academy Award for it. I have long praised Steven Biko on here and Shandon told me I should see this so my good friend MsFangtastic79 got the film for me to watch and we did in fact watch it tonight. I am in awe. In awe of Mr. Biko and his plight and that of his people. We have been conditioned to find a man like Donald Woods heroic but isn't' he really just doing what we all should do anyway? He is a good man for doing the common sense right thing. Mr. Biko is a hero for standing for that common sense right thing and in the end giving his life for it.
Donald Woods is a newspaperman that prints the truth. At first it is just here-say but with help from a Doctor and Mr. Biko it becomes the only truth in South Africa. How sad that it is repressed with death and violence. Mr. Biko is well educated and brilliant. He opens eyes of a "liberal" that should have already opened to common sense and we the viewer are convinced that Mr. Woods is a hero. And don't get me wrong he did face extreme danger, injustice, and prejudice to get his and Mr. Biko's story out. But as Mr. Biko would tell you it took a white man being in danger to get the real injustice to the world at large. Why were WE as a PEOPLE not incensed by the plight of the South African and Apartheid before this? Why did it take SOOOO fucking long in this country that we live in to realize the color of skin does not matter we are ALL HUMAN. For God's sake where has COMMON SENSE GONE? Where does it if EVER come into play? I just don't understand. And I guess I never will.
Long live Steven Biko and thank you to men like him and to this man Donald Woods who realized what every human being on this planet should realize. People are people plain and simple. There is no hierarchy. No superior being. We are all the same and we are going to have to live together to make this planet work. Geez, nothing is more simple nothing less complicated and yet wars have been fought, good people have died, families have suffered. WTF. That is all I can say.
