This film which is basically a documentary, was on cable this past Saturday and for the first time both me and my fiance Shandon watched it all. I was astonished at all I learned when I thought I knew so much. First of all this film is about Timothy Treadwell, a naturist who studied Grizzly Bears in Alaska's Grizzly Sanctuary and in his own Grizzly Maze for 13 years.
Mr. Treadwell was revealed in this film as not just a companion and warrior for animals but also as a man. He showed his sense of loneliness when on film he wondered why women didn't stay with him. He said "I have a great personality, I am fun, I don't fight. I am really rather passive. Do women not like that?" He also talked at great length about his battle with alcoholism and how the animals and his love for them saved him. He was revealed as a probably Bipolar individual who dealt with his own personal demons. He fought a good fight for the animals.
My favorite parts of the film are as such: the part where he mourns a bumble bee that seems to have died while pollinating a flower. Timmy goes on and on about the futility of life and the loss and says "I LOVE this bee" in a tearful voice. He then pauses a bit. The bee moves. He says "it moved. maybe it was sleeping" and the audience can feel his amazed bewilderment. It was a funny yet touching moment of film. My second favorite moment is when Timmy cries out to "Jesus, Christ-man, Allah, floaty guy", to make it rain for his animals. They are hungry and need a salmon run for food. He screams into the camera about this and is clearly angry. The next day he turns on the camera again to say he is a servant of Christ, a follower of Allah, will do whatever the floaty man wants, because rain has fallen and it seems to be a miracle. I love to see this man's faith and good nature rewarded in whatever way. One of the truly good people on this planet. Timothy is just too sweet. I guess that was why I assumed he was gay until seeing this film. It just seems some times that straight men are not capable of this depth of feeling. God bless you Timothy and I pray for all the animals in the Maze and in the Sanctuary unprotected since your death. Six died the first year he was no longer there. God help us all.
