Well done, Johnny, there's no reason to put up with idiotic questions! I'm so tired of clueless interviewers, wish more people had the guts to just hang up on them.

I think it is all a question of respect. The interviewer was being dis-respectful of John and John just doesn't put up with that. Good for him! The really unfortunate thing is that it is clear this reporter doesn't even realize that he should have been listening to what John was talking about & trying to understand the issues involved. He apparently thinks it is OK to tell John that he should be able to record in the basement and throw some crap out on the Internet. And to laugh, when it is obvious that John is offended? Then he leaves off with the implication that the problem was with John & not with his "skill" as an interviewer. More people should require the news media to treat them with common courtesy & respect. Too many reporters think they are the news. If they got hung up on more often, maybe they would learn to be more respectful. I'm really looking forward to seeing John & PiL on May 14th. Maybe Mr. Mervis will be there to apologize (but I doubt it).

Not only was this guy disrespectful, but he didn't do five minutes of homework on the band. ProTools? MySpace? John's stated many times he can barely use a computer! At least respect that Lydon is from a different generation of musicians and is not going to change just because that's the trend.
I had the pleasure of interviewing John many years ago. We sparred a bit, because that's just his personality, but there was no offense on either side. He's a very interesting guy to talk with, and he really listens, which is not typical of "rock star" interviews. He'll go in any direction the interviewer wants--music-related or not--because unlike many others, he's not just trying to sell records. He went on a record company rant with me, too, and I remember thinking that he wasn't helping to keep his contract with that kind of talk...but that's just the way he operates.
I think the Lydon interviews that end badly (and Mervis' is not the first) do so because the interviewer goes in looking for a fight. Sort of like the "fans" who for some reason are still spitting at shows!

Oh, I dunno, it seemed like a legit question to me. Recording some songs in the basement one's own way without record company restraint & distributing 'em oneself seems like a very "punk rock" or "John" thing to do. We're talking about the guy who wrote & sang "EMI." When did Lydon become such a pal of the record companies?
And if he can't use a computer, I'm sure he can find a young aspiring musician who would help him with this for free, just to get it on his resume.
In any event, I look forward to reading the whole interview before passing judgment on Mr. Mervis (with whom I've had a few pleasant email exchanges about music) so I can take it all in the proper context.
I won't be going to the May 14 show at Club Zoo. Can't think of a worse venue to hold that show.

He left punk behind years ago really, but he has been outspoken for a long time on how companies don't support the bands they put out and then blame the band for bad sales. He is right about that. I think John just still wants the companies to do their supposed jobs rather than internet flavors of the month putting out many random performers with no real talent just because they have universal access to the neighborhood geek squad. Nothing against this interviewer. He just doesn't know John.

Yes, the interviews I have seen with him he can be all over the place with subjects but that is usually when he is having the most fun. And lots of times it is the reaction the interviewer gives him over what he says that cues his behavior.

Yeah, I understand that you're not attacking the interviewer & I agree with the point about record company support--or more specifically, the lack thereof. But instead of dismissing the idea out of hand, isn't it fun to imagine what kinda music Lydon could put on a web site without having to pass it thru some record company's semll test? A site similar to Roger McGuinn's Folk Den would be fun---something to whet the appetites of his good fans while he's in between recording. BTW, don't get me wrong---I found the exchange between Lydon & Mervis amusing. That's why I posted it for you & others here to enjoy. I'm just on the side of the fence that believes hanging up was more a part of Lydon's comic routine than his being upset over the question.

I think he likes potential interviewers knowing that he might do that. I think he kind of feels it keeps them on their toes and the questions more well thought out most times.

I had met him in person a couple years before (as a fan), but I didn't mention that until the end of our phone interview. I almost didn't bring it up at all, because how would he remember that? But he said "Oh, I remember you!" and recalled some details from that day that I had not. It made a big impression, needless to say, that he paid that much attention to his fans. There are many stories on the boards of what an arrogant jerk he is in person, but I can only say that was not at all my experience.

Thanks for this. One reason I enjoy Lydon interviews is that there's always something new and usually something amusing. (Much as I love Television, I laughed out loud at the Tom Verlaine comment.)
