I don't understand at all where he is coming from with this. He has a right to his opinion but maybe he should do a self assessment and see if HE has done as much for people in general as Bono has. Bono puts his money where his mouth is.

Personally, I don't want my rock stars to be diplomats (and vice versa). I actually find it frightening that someone can gain that sort of influence among world leaders because they can sing or act.
One reason I preferred the Pistols over the Clash is because I found the Clash's politicizing to be tiresome as well as naive. And the richer a rock star gets, the less I want to hear his pleas for justice and equality for all. I'd respect them much more if they funded the organizations they believed in and sponsored a couple hundred or so Save the Children kids--and kept their mouths shut about it!
That said, I'm not defending John's comments because I think he's gone on too much about other people lately and is starting to look petty...I don't think he's making any new fans with these interviews, so I'm not sure of their point.

I understand what you are saying and largely when it comes to many "socially conscious" celebrities I agree with you. But I just think Bono and U2 are different. I think they HAD those feelings before they were famous (I was a fan back in 1980), and now that they are famous they STILL hold true to what they were then. Bono is not just an artist/singer, he is a very intelligent man who may some day run for office in his home country. His wife is also held in very high regard in Ireland for her scientific and political action. Action, not talk. I think Bono does, as Shandon stated, put his money where his mouth is. I don't think he is just some celebrity trying to effect change for publicity, I think he is very well read on the issues he puts his celebrity behind. I respect him for that. However, having said all of that, I can still laugh with the members of INXS when they said via a joke that God liked to pretend he is Bono. I just admire the man's heart.
