Well soon it will once again be All Hallows Eve. Here are but a few of my favorite Horror Films All films are the original and not the remake unless specified otherwise
1. When a Stranger Calls--(original)---I just find the premise of someone already IN the house so d*mn good. I love the catch line of "the calls are coming from inside the house...GET OUT NOW" so spooky and chilling. I loved Carol Kane's performance in this film but the actor that played the protagonist really deserved some kind of award. This man was spot on for mental illness without the over the top invincible Bogey man we see so often in this genre. He is AMAZING and actually made me feel so much pity for him. Just an incredible performance unequaled that I have seen even to this day.
2. Psycho (original)-------Anthony Perkins gives a performance still studied in acting schools to this day. As Norman (think Normal, that is how they chose the name), he is a sympathetic character that you would not suspect if you hadn't heard the ending already. I have spoken to many people who saw the original film in theaters when it was released and they all thought there WAS a demented Mother. Norman remains sympathetic even at the end when you KNOW he is the killer and quite crazy.
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)-----Phenomenal for the time period. Low budget film that has gotten a bad rap for blood shed. There is actually very very little blood in the 1973 original. It is the IMPLIED actions of the Family and Leatherface that are really frightening. It should also be noted that Leatherface was very child-like and probably the product of in-breeding in this film. He kills to protect his home and to get rid of the interlopers. Quite outdated but the premise rings true today. And hey kids, if you come up on someone else's property, DON'T invite YOURSELF inside the house. Geez
4. Friday the 13th (original)----Whoa this movie is the first and foremost in slasher films but did you know the original killer in this film is a lady? Mrs. Voorhees, expertly played by Betsy Palmer (she was a nurse in Mr. Roberts with Henry Fonda and Jimmy Cagney in 1955)), holds her own with the best of the genre. In the end a film about a Mom in mourning avenging the death of her 10 year old handicapped child....chchch-hahaha <--Jason's theme
5. Halloween (original)---oh yes. Had to get Michael Myers in there and that wonderful background music. This man was THE Bogey man. He was invincible and escaped from an insane asylum what more could you ask?
6. Nightmare on Elm street (original)----Robert Englund IS Freddy Krueger. Freddy is a child molester/killer that died when the parents of the children burned him alive in a case of vigilante justice. Freddy then returns to seek his OWN brand of justice, haunting the dreams of the parents now teenage children. WONDERFUL idea based loosely on a true story.
7. Candyman---Tony Todd is a murdered slave who was killed for loving and being loved by a white woman in the old South. He returns if you say his name (Candyman) five times while looking in a mirror. EXCELLENT film.
8. Child's Play---Brad Dourif voices a doll called "Chucky" , the nickname of killer Charles Lee Ray, who entices a 6 year old to take him to places where he can seek revenge on those that led to his death. The end game? Chucky must possess the body of the child as he had done with the doll or he will be stuck in the doll's body forever. Wonderful idea.
9. Blair Witch Project---three college students film a documentary on a reported ghost, The Blair Witch. She is a lady that was murdered during the witchhunts of old and apparently returns to seek revenge. While filming the documentary in the woods leading to a cemetery, the three students vanish. One year later their footage is found. This film scared the hell out of me with it's ending. That is hard to do.
10. Silent Night Deadly Night------This one heads on to another holiday we are already seeing advertised. Christmas. Have you ever thought about the fact that Santa wears red? Comes down a chimney in to fire from which he steps out unscathed? That he is watching you and knows if you have been bad or good? Be good for goodness sake? Is that a THREAT? Well, this film explores this concept in the mind of a child. We meet a child whose insane grandfather (who is being visited by the parents though institutionalized), tells him that Santa only brings presents to children who have been COMPLETELY good all year. Other children he punishes. Grandfather (who was supposed to have been mute) then leans forward and ominously asks the little child "Have you been good ALLLL year?". Then the parents re-emerge (just in time ). The child is terrified. On the car drive home at night the parents stop for a man in a Santa suit who is actually a robber/felon. He rapes mom and murders both parents in front of the 5 year old boy and his infant brother. The children are taken to a Catholic orphanage. The Mother Superior is harsh and installs in the children that sexual activity is wrong and most children are born bad. The lead child becomes 17 and is working at a toy store. It is Christmas. He is asked to play Santa. You can imagine what happens next as this well meaning kid snaps finally. AMAZING film with an incredible, believable storyline.
