I was and obviously still am a very big fan of this band as they were 1989-1999. I have a tattoo of Layne Staley THE singer on my back. This past week the original bass player, Mike Starr, passed away of yet undetermined causes. He was on Methadone for his heroin addiction and xanax for the anxiety caused by addiction.
Mike had become a reality TV performer in the last couple of years but that is not how I remember him. I remember him from the fun years of being an Alice Fan girl. I remember him looking damn good on stage and videographer after videographer after photographer concentrating on him while I screamed "DAMMIT, what IS he a damn space ALIEN for getting all of that attention away from my boy Layne?" I called him Mikey #1 after he left and Mike Inez "replaced" him in the band, and I joked about him having an "alien death ray" to zap all of the profaners that had forgotten him. Damn.
I met him 5 1/2 years ago at a Layne Staley Fund benefit show. He was not allowed inside because of his continued addiction and he shared with me and my Alice Buds that he was there when Layne died. It had been Mike's birthday that night April 3rd 2002 and he and Layne were celebrating the only way addicts know how. They were shooting speedballs. Only Layne was down to 86 lbs and couldn't take any more . He seized. Before he died he begged Mike not to call an ambulance. NO more publicity Layne begged. Mike didn't call. Layne died. Mike panicked and left. Layne's body was found two weeks later. Mike never ever forgot. He never got over it. I still remember him hugging us and begging us to tell him that Layne forgave him, that Layne's mother forgave him, that WE forgave him. We told him there was not anything to ask forgiveness for. I am so grateful for the opportunity to try to make him understand that he was not at fault.
Alice was an amazingly unique band, Layne was an exceptional singer, and Mike Starr was an amazing human being. I will miss you Mikey #1
