all the various line ups had something to offer IMO....
However the early line up and the later one with McGeogh were fantastic!!

My first reaction was that the Levene, Wobble and Atkins line up was definitely the best but then again noir is right, all of the line ups had something to offer, I really like that the members kept changing (no matter for what reasons) because it made the albums very diverse, although nothing was better than Jah's bass.

I LOVED Jah's bass work.....but I also really like *Rise* and *Dissapointed*....(and add to the fact that I haven't heard very much PiL) so I can't pick a favorite line-up......I think that the consensus of each one offering something different is correct.....at least that's how I feel......

I completely agree about the consensus, various line ups produced so different music, it wasn't better or worse, it was just different. And the fact that they don't seem to be called limited for nothing does make it a lot difficult to choose a favorite. I'm quite familiar with the music, I actually managed to find some of PIL in some local small record shop but I'm clueless about the history of the band, like for example, besides the obvious four, I can only name three other members off the top of my head. :/

I understand that, but I would like to build THIS site to include some info as well. Once everything is out of the boxes here I will get to work. There are many many great sites out there and you are certainly right that that one is the official and best one, but the goal here is to make this the best damn message board possible. It is just the easy way out for me (in my opinion) to just post a series of links to other people's sites. It is difficult (but not impossible) for one person to do that and do it well, kudos to "Scott" (I don't know the gentleman but I am sure he puts much hard work into his site).

WOW, I had no idea who did John's official site! How did he get that job I wonder? The site is of course wonderful!! I would love for you to post those links..........I would like to hear more from the 1986-1993 time period myself.... .......I have cable internet now, can watch youtube and videos but have to download a program (it seems) before I can listen to audio........working on that slowly but surely......

Personally (being a very self righteous individual) my favorite PiL is the orignal incarnation because I love Jah Wobble & Jim Walker (original drummer, really talented). And I won't listen to anything after Keith Levene left, because once again, I'm very self righteous. According to most accounts, the band got very... cabaret (i can't think of any other word) after a little while, specifically after Keith left. They did some good stuff, but in my mind, it's took massive steps back from where the band had gotten with Keith and Jah. :]
.....But that's just my opinion. :]]]]
I guess it doesn't mean that some incarnations are BAD, in my mind, they just aren't as GOOD or innovative. If it makes sense.... :]

This topic was actually posted on a myspace PiL group as "the band broke up after 1983". I think that is insulting not just to John, but also to the HUGE contribution people like John McGeoch and Alan Dias brought to PiL in the late eighties, early nineties. I LOVE that incarnation of the group more and more (the more I listen). I think bands as well as people have to grow and mature, and that is what I think John did with the evolution of PiL. I think he just relaxed more and came to enjoy the music he was creating, as well as that process. I don't think he works as easily in environments where there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians

I don't know - it just doesn't sound right. I'm sure it has nothing to do with them, I just personally don't like it. I'm sure they're really creative and talented, but it's just not something I like listening too..............

Actually I msspoke the topic that I felt was insulting.......they had stated that PiL was no more after Commercial Zone (not a PiL album) in 1983 PiL continued to record and make music until 1992.
