I have a pretty strong phobia of monkeys and apes. I know, they're similiar to humans, but something about monkeys/apes really really really really really really creeps me out to a point where I don't like to see them.
Thus, Planet of the Apes is not the movie for me. I watched a few minutes of it once and literally almost punched my best friend in the face because she wouldn't turn it off.

The original with Heston, I haven't given ole Tim Burton's awful film the time of day... I can see there are no other fans on here but what I found really interesting in the Making Of documentary is that the actors who played the various Apes (Chimps, Gorillas, and Orangutans) all kind of stuck in their various "species" when off camera......in other words an actor playing a Chimpanzee character would not eat with one playing a Gorilla and yet they did this subconsciously. Interesting commentary when you think of the various classes in our real society and past segregation.

I haven't seen the documentary you mention. However, I did like the original planet of the apes. I remember that when it came out (1968) my sister & I took my father to the theater to see it for Father's Day. I'm not sure that he was all that excited, but my sister & I really wanted to see it.
I think the movie had a lot going on. The segregation issues you mention as well as our destruction of our own civilization. One of those films that is trying to teach something, but manages to be entertaining at the same time.

But I have to say the lady that played Dr. Zira and of course Roddy McDowell playing Cornelius really looked the part and did a wonderful job of showing emotion in those costumes. I loved the religious connotations. The Ape is created in the Divine image and therefor has a "spark" that no other creature has. How like my upbringing is THAT (only that man has that spark)? I LOVED the scene where the Orangutan judges on the high court did the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" thing that you see in so many caricatures. And of course the "Sacred Scrolls" refer to the Bible and Dr. Zehus being the Chief Defender of the Faith and the leader of the Ministry of Science is just so funny. No conflict THERE good buddy The acting was superb, and the ending classic EC comics as far as I was concerned, just BRILLIANT. Wonderful film that Tim Burton has probably buried.

Love John. Hate apes. Cannot see John associating with sad apes. You said it, Mish, re: John!!! I DEPLORE those stupid Planet of the Apes movies, all of them... Why I wonder? They have a good message for our time and serve as a warning..........I can see not liking them (they got a bit over-done there for a while : .........but that seems a bit........well..... .....strong to me.

I think the warning gets lost behind the fact of OMG THEY ARE FUNNY LOOKING MONKEYS HOLY SHIT.
Example: Tropic Thunder. All those people were mad because of the use of the word "retard." The thing is, most of the people protesting realized that the point of that part of the movie was to point out how ridiculous it is that some people win Oscars simply because they played a mentally handicapped person. But that message got lost by the fact that most people who go into that movie theatre (Americans, especially) will be laughing at Ben Stiller acting like a complete doofus and being called a retard. They will not look for any further meaning behind it. So while the point was valid, it was not handled or portrayed in a way that the average American looking to go see a funny (possibly satirical) movie could analyze correctly in the moment.
So, basically: there are ways to portray a point and a warning. You have to do it in a way that is correct and doesn't get misconstrued or easily uninterpreted because of something else. So the message of Planet of the Apes gets lost because Holy shit, there are these weird looking monkey things and that's weird.

So the message of Planet of the Apes gets lost because Holy shit, there are these weird looking monkey things and that's weird. I have no doubt that you are 100% correct. But I must say it just leaves me thinking that most people are stupid and we shouldn't have to "dumb down" movies for them........ I should add that what the producers were doing was common practice in a time of racial hatred and prejudice, mask the issue in science fiction and sometimes you can get ignorant people to see the light. For example. There was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where there was an alien race called the Genii. This race was androgynous and they felt it was wrong to believe one was "male" or "female". To feel that one had been born with a gender was an abomination and required that one receive intensive therapy and reprogramming to make you "normal". Everyone wants to be "normal" was the feeling on that world. Well it shouldn't take a rocket scientist here to figure out that the whole episode was addressing homosexuality, and how damn dumb it is that even today in our modern world some refuse to believe that people do not "choose" that lifestyle, that they are in fact born that way. The writers of the show felt that people could see the injustice if they took it in the context of an alien world refusing to follow our "norm" rather than facing our own prejudice here on Earth. Maybe that was lost too because the Genii women were ugly.

Class films......as you say the first Planet of the Apes film had that jaw dropping ending that really is a Cinema masterpiece!! Then again the originals were always classier than remakes...Think of The Omega Man with Charlton in it compared to Will Smith`s lame effort!!
As Sci Fi movies go it is up there in the Top Ten...my all time favourite is Blade Runner though.
