Does anyone watch this stuff besides me? If so, which is your favorite of these two competitors in the blood trade? Why?

Ugh Twilight. I have such issues with young girls reading Twilight. I'm an advocate at my college - I'm trained to help other students who have been raped or who are in abusive situations. So when I read the Twilight books, all I could think of was that Edward Cullen (and all other male characters in the book) meet all 14 criteria of an abusive partner. Creepy. And girls all think they want "an Edward" now and I'm like, no, you don't want an Edward, please don't want an Edward. What Edward and Bella have is not love, it's lust and obsession rolled into one abusive, creepy package. I also take issue with all the Mormon undertones that are imbedded in Twilight. Not that there is anything wrong with Mormonism, but it's just creepy to me, because Stephanie Meyers is such an odd, odd woman.
I love True Blood on HBO! I just started watching it (I get the DVDs from Netflix.) I read the Sookie Stackhouse books (that it is based on) ages ago, and I really disliked them. The TV show is much, much, much better. The guy who plays Bill is wonderful.

I have to agree a bit on the Twilight series...it's just a high school hormonal phase as my pen pal in Illinois described it! I like vampires and vampire tales but it has to be realistic or interesting, like Bram Stoker's Dracula, not childish! The books are much better than the movie due to the terrible actors and ridiculous visual effects....and Bella acts like a damsel in distress, she can't do anything without Edward and he has to come and rescue her all the time! We don't want girls to behave like that in the 21st century do we.

Does anyone watch this stuff besides me? If so, which is your favorite of these two competitors in the blood trade? Why? Well, I love vampire stories - one of my goals is to have every vampire movie made on DVD. What that really means is that we have a lot of bad movies on DVD. However, as much as I like vampires, I have to say that neither True Blood nor Twilight has caught my interest. I haven't read any of the Twilight books; I only saw the movie on DVD. I thought it was OK & maybe if I was 13 or 14 I would have found Edward to be sexy. But I'm not a teen, so this really isn't for me. As for True Blood, - I was very excited for the start of the series. I only really watched the first several episodes & found Bill to be so boring I couldn't stand it. I haven't read those books either, but I've been told by those who have that the vampire is just basically boring. My boyfriend (who isn't such a vampire fan), however, is still recording & watching the series. He tells me that this year is much more interesting, but I haven't watched most of it. I don't like either of these as much as Buffy or Angel or Moonlight for that matter. I have started watching "Being Human" & after 2 episodes that seems to have some promise. Have to see where it goes from here on. At least the vampire is good looking. Better than Bill or Edward (but still not Spike . Joan

I have to say I have never read Twilight or saw any of the movies (if there are more than one). However, as is evident from my recent posts I am hook line and sinker for True Blood. I don't find anything about that series boring. I love Bill, but the best looking vampire I have ever seen bar NONE is Eric. SCHLURRRRRP

True Blood by FAR. Mostly for Eric Northman really, but still. What the hell are those SPARKLING vampires in Twilight, if I may ask? When I saw the movie I thought it was some kind of parody of vampire movies...

The author of Twilight (Stephanie Meyer) pretty much stole elements from all other vampire novels (there are elements of the Sookie Stackhouse series [for example, Edward can hear people's thoughts, like Sookie, but cannot hear Bella's, like Sookie cannot hear Bill's, as well as all Ann Rice novels) in her vampires and then added her own self insert (Bella) and made it everything she wanted in high school: boys fighting over her, brainless female just standing around, weird wedding night* (following a vaguely Mormon wedding). I don't know where the sparkling thing came from, but I assume Meyer stole it from some young teen vampire book - it seems like she has spent most of her life desperately wishing she was something else and then stole elements from all her favorite books to write her own.
*Bella is unconscious for the wedding night and wakes up covered in bruises - essentially, Edward raped her (although Bella doesn't call it rape, she's just like, "oh that's how it goes, you know") while she was unconscious, but it was totally romantic because they are married now (even though the first books are all about how she wants to jump Edward's bones, but he's all like "no we wait till marriage round these parts" and when she finally gets to, she's unconscious. SO ROMANTIC). She then goes through a back-breaking, rib-crushing pregnancy (even though logically, Edward can't have viable sperm, because he's a vampire and therefore dead; so if he had sperm from before he was a vampire, then it would be like 100 year old sperm; if he didn't, he couldn't make sperm, because he's dead. Unless, his sparkles are his magical dumb vampire sperm, I don't know what the fuck is going on there), has a baby after a Edward basically rips her open to give her a c-section, gives it a fucked up name, and the werewolf (Jacob) falls in love with the baby (he had previously been all about Bella but then he was like, "BABY? Yes, please.") YEAH THE LAST BOOK IS WEIRD.
I like True Blood because it makes sense. And Bill is sexy and I like how he says his name. "Bill."

That makes sense because his human time WAS after all the 1800s I like how it kind of shows how immortality can fuck you up and be confusing. Wow, Twilight just doesn't sound like I would be that big a fan. I may check it out at some point though just because I don't want to comment on something I haven't even seen too much . I really appreciate people posting that HAVE read and seen it. Thanks Mish!

When I saw the movie I thought it was some kind of parody of vampire movies... Yeah I don't get that "sparkle thing" either. And the vampires can go out during daylight? What the fuck? Cause you know NIGHTTIME is largely the allure of vampires OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo another Eric/True Blood fan, I am glad you are here Angie! Did you see tonight's episode? MY GOD. Godric is EXACTLY like I hoped he would be. A vampire that walked before Christ SHOULD have the wisdom of the ages and nothing should really seem that unusual to him. That is exactly how he is and Allen Hyde is doing an EXCELLENT job! Welcome to the cast Allen Didn't you LOVE the part where Eric told Sookie not to use words she doesn't understand when she commented on Godric being his maker, and then (the best part) when he told her not to use words HE didn't understand when she commented on him loving Godric. Even though Eric is 1000 years old the whole integration of humanity with his vampire immortality and blood lust is alien to him and his confusion is just SEXXXXXy. ;D Anxiously awaiting next week's episode ...

I like the humor on the show and what I have seen is well written so far to a point. I still prefer the old vampire movies though. It seems to me that Hollywood present day just turns everything into a soap opera sooner or later.

Yeah, I was actually hesitant to watch the first Season when it was loaned to me because I thought it WOULD be a soap opera with vampires, but as you yourself have seen it isn't. I LOVE how the writers use humor, I knew that would be something we both could agree on I also like the old vampire films, they just have a feel to them not present now.
